Candle Making 101: Crafting Tranquil Atmospheres at Home
How to Make Candles at Home
1. Gather your supplies.
To make candles at home, you will need the following supplies:
- Wax (soy wax, beeswax, or paraffin wax)
- Containers (jars, tins, or molds)
- Fragrance oil or essential oil (optional)
- Dye (optional)
- Double boiler or microwave-safe bowl
- Newspaper or paper towels
- Safety glasses
2. Prepare your workspace.
Before you start making candles, it is important to prepare your workspace. Cover your work surface with newspaper or paper towels to protect it from wax spills. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from wax splatters.
3. Melt the wax.
If you are using a double boiler, fill the bottom pot with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the wax in the top pot and let it melt slowly, stirring occasionally. If you are using a microwave, place the wax in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it on high for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between, until the wax is melted.
4. Add fragrance oil or essential oil (optional).
Once the wax is melted, you can add fragrance oil or essential oil, if desired. Stir to combine.
5. Add dye (optional).
If you want to color your candles, you can add dye at this point. Stir to combine.
6. Pour the wax into the containers.
Carefully pour the melted wax into the prepared containers. If you are making multiple candles, work in batches.
7. Add wicks.
Once the wax has cooled slightly, you can add the wicks. Center the wicks in the center of the candles and hold them in place with clothespins or clips.
8. Let the candles cool and harden.
Candles will need to cool and harden for at least 24 hours before they can be burned.
9. Trim the wicks.
Once the candles have cooled and hardened, you can trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch.
10. Enjoy your candles!
Your homemade candles are now ready to be enjoyed. Light them and relax in the warm, inviting glow.
