Cooling System Overhaul Part 1 1987 Cab Over Frei Overhauling the coolant system on my 1987 freightliner cabover fl86 low flow big cam 350 cummins. replacing every belt and hose and cost of repairs. I have a 1989 444 big cam. over 1.1 million miles as low flow. started running hot recently. we replaced the radiator, water pump and clutch fan. all were useless. she's still running hot when loaded. i'm considering a high flow conversion. my 444 is a 1210 cpl. i have a couple high flow parts trucks that may be of use.
1987 Freightliner Cabover Big Cam Cummins Formula Coolant Sys 1988 would be big cam iv. they were all low flow cooling. this system was known for over heating problems, and thermostats did not hold up well. you can change it to a full flow system like the earlier big cams. if the entire system is in excellant condition, it is usable, but is still problematic. you say it is 370 hp "made" into a 444?. 17 posts · joined 2012. #1 · feb 19, 2014. cpl749. i have a 1986 freightliner flc 120 truck that i use for a lowboy truck. right now, i am running an 8l transmission. the engine says 315 horsepower on the side. it is a brown engine. i bought the truck from a friend years ago when they bent the cab of the truck. The system must be filled thru this port with the engine running, very slow process, takes about 2 hours. it will continue to burp air and coolant out during this process, and you need to continue to top it up until it no longer burps air or coolant out. now replace the plug and fill the rad to the proper level.
