U S Route 40 National Old Trails Ocean To Ocean Highway By 1849 the lure of instant wealth and tales of gold beckoned at the end of the 2,000 mile california trail. the story of the men, women, and children who traveled overland to the west coast has become an american epic. since the late 1700s, the west had held out the promise of boundless opportunity. The national old trails ocean to ocean highway (more often refered to as the national old trails highway) began in 1912. the highway was a pet project of judge joseph m. lowe of kansas city. the highway's route underwent much fine tuning at the start, however, laid the groundwork for many numbered highways including route 40 and route 66. In 1847 and 1848 mormon battalion veterans, after being discharged in california from their u. s. military service in the mexican war, helped establish important sections of the california trail including the carson route, sometimes called the mormon carson emigrant trail; hensley's salt lake cutoff; and the southern route from the salt lake valley to the spanish trail. U.s. route 40 or u.s. highway 40 (us 40), also known as the main street of america (a nickname shared with u.s. route 66), [3] [4] is a major east–west united states highway traveling across the united states from the mountain states to the mid atlantic states. as with most routes whose numbers end in a zero, us 40 once traversed the entire united states.
